An OCEAN of beauty
In nearly two years of its presence in the Indian market, Phytomer – a French manufacturer of marine-based spa and skin products, has come a long way

Rekha Chaudhari, co-owner of JCKRC Spa Destination and distributor for Phytomer in India talks about the brand’s achievements and its future strategies.

Forty years of mastering the art of creating the best formulas for skin and body wellness, Phytomer today has a sea of excellent marine-based products for its clients, distributed through some of the finest spas across the world.

The company was envisioned by Jean Gédouin, then a young visionary entrepreneur, who had a passion for scientific studies and proved the benefits of sea water for the skin. Thus Phytomer, one of the oldest marine-based products, was brought to life.

The Brand
Phytomer has developed a high-tech cosmetology, which extracts the aesthetic benefits of marine life. Scientists at Phytomer research and create defense systems with algae and marine plants that allow them to survive in hostile environments (like/under waves, UV rays, pollution, etc). These are then used in their cosmetic range. The products also have active ingredients capable of reproducing these natural processes in the skin and in cosmetic formulations.

To defend and promote the huge potential that is in the oceans, the cosmetic brand is committed to promoting marine biodiversity. Phytomer’s unique programs on algal cultures helps to conserve natural resources and these (algae) are reintroduced as some of nature’s endangered species. The company believes in responsible methods of production, such as using filtering gardens to clean up wastewater or participating in green energy development.

When did Phytomer enter the Indian market? What has been the response to the brand?
Even though Phytomer had a good positioning globally, when it entered the Indian market in 2010, people were skeptical about it. That was because the concept of marine-based products was new. Due to its unique Dead Sea extract combinations and marine-based properties, that the brand had the potential to do wonders in skin and body treatments. With that positive notion, the brand was launched with full force and today it is one of the best-selling brands in the market.

How is it perceived by the Indian spa industry?
Since the brand was already established firmly in the international market, it did not need much time to gain consumers’ trust. The brand was so well positioned that it was highly accepted in standalone, hotel and resort spas with its exclusively-designed treatments.

How has the brand been marketed in India?
Phytomer is known as a premium products’ brand. The exclusivity of the brand has been maintained in India by distributing it only to high-end spas and salons. Since Phytomer’s concept is based on unique marine-based properties, we have tried to preserve its distinctiveness by not making it common.

What has been the key to success for Phytomer worldwide?
It is Phytomer’s focus on marine products that makes it successful. The image of the brand is very consistent with the performance of marine treatments. Phytomer was developed 40 years ago to bring Thalassotherapy treatments into beauty salons, which led us into the spa market in USA in the early 1990’s. One may say that Phytomer is at the origin of spa treatments.

Winning Products

Tell us a little about how the products are formulated?

The brand does group research and development, which combine scientific minds from the laboratory, educators and marketing personnel. It is planned and decided about two years in advance what type of products would be developed and launched. The formulators give different proposals that we select. When a proposal has been selected, an in-vitro test is done the laboratory. If those are satisfying, then clinical tests are carried out.

What do Phytomer products offer consumers that other brands don’t?
Phytomer has a unique product called Oligomer, which is freeze-dried seawater. It allows us to reconstitute the marine environment. The Seawater Pearl facial treatment is also a unique combination of different ingredients. This is unique to Phytomer.

Spas

Having being known as a recognized skin brand, what possibilities has Phytomer foreseen while launching a spa line?
Phytomer itself is a spa brand. Our products have been used by the spa industry ever since it started. We are the pioneers in the spa industry. It is also usually perceived that Phytomer makes mostly face therapy products; however, the fact is that it is used for body treatments as well…Read the full version of the article on emag.spamantra.in
