Space for Peace
Writer | Urmi Chanda-Vaz

With its abundant spaces, the Vyoma Spa at Radisson Blu, New Delhi, Paschim Vihar offers complete wellness, fitness and beauty solutions.

There has always been a romance associated with ‘Dilli ki sardi’ (Delhi winters). The prospect of visiting the capital in the cold season was an exciting, if ‘chilling’ one. I landed on an early December morning to be greeted by the quintessential Delhi scenes featuring sweater-clad figures and foggy breaths. I took in the sights and sounds of the morning while being
driven to the western part of the city. A 45-minute drive brought me to the gates of one of West Delhi’s most luxurious hospitality properties, the Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar.

Abode of the Posh

Everything about the Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi spells extravagance. It is among the few business hotels that take so much care and pride after their appearance. It is a Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group property, and is among the scores that have sprung up in three short years since the company’s inception in December 2010. All Carlson Rezidor properties follow a global standard of service and style, and the Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar property is no different. This upscale hotel is one of the most posh hospitality properties in West Delhi and is a favourite with business and leisure travellers alike. It is also a hit with wedding parties – especially for those quintessentially lavish Punjabi weddings.
The Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar has been designed by architects, Anil Sharma and Associates, while renowned interior designer, Bobby Mukherji of Bobby Mukherji & Associates was responsible for the hotel’s wonderful interiors. The hotel has been done up in the Neo Gothic theme in colours such as black, whites, reds and metallic accents. Grand halls with huge mirrors, metallic chandeliers, giant pieces of vintage-style furniture, and Baroque motifs on marble flooring give the hotel a palatial air.
Ensconced in this luxurious setting over 12 floors are well-appointed rooms, suites, meeting & board rooms, ballrooms, a tea-lounge, a bar and specialty and multi-cuisine restaurants. Of the restaurants, the hotel especially prides itself for Indyaki, where Indian food is cooked on live Teppanyaki grills and served fresh to the guests. Among recreation facilities, they have a rooftop swimming pool – the only such pool in West Delhi, a fitness centre, a salon, and most importantly, the lovely Vyoma Spa.

The Vyoma Spa

Nestled on the second floor of the hotel, alongside the dazzling Oro bar and the celebrated Indyaki restaurant, the Vyoma Spa is among the highlights of the hotel. ‘Vyoma’ means space in Sanskrit, and it underlines the vast space of the spa. In fact, luxurious, abundant space is also the spa’s concept.

The Vyoma Spa was established in August 2011, in association with Pevonia Botanica, just a little after the hotel opened its doors. With highly effective products from the American brand, the spa aims to offer international-level spa treatments and therapies to its clients.

Spread over 12,000 square feet, the spa receives its guests in a calming reception cum retail area. It houses a relaxation area and five large treatment rooms. Of these, three are single treatment rooms and one is a couple treatment room. The couple treatment room doubles as two single treatment rooms as and when necessary. There is also one special room for scrubs with a special steam bed. Each room has an attached steam and shower chamber. I especially loved the LED-rimmed rain shower panels, which make for an ethereal showering experience.

The spa rooms have high ceilings, and when one lies on a treatment bed looking up, one may as well be floating in Vyoma. They’re done up in warm play online blackjack at absolute poker woods, a beige palette, and an array of high quality spa furniture from the Italian spa furniture brand, Lemi. The spa is overseen by F J Singh, Managing Director, India, for PevoniaBotanica, while it is managed by spa manager, Sanjana Bhandari.

The salon, the gym and the pool are also part of the spa, although the pool is housed on a different floor. The spacious salon offers a wide range of beauty services for hair and skin and uses L’Oréal Professionnel, Paul Mitchell, Schwarzkopf and of course Pevonia Botanica products.

The gym is a popular haunt for house guests and members equally. Spread over 3000 square feet, the gym has the most up-to-date Technogym equipment for cardio and weight training. The gym also offers activities like Yoga, core fitness, meditation and the very popular Zumba.

Staff and Training

The Vyoma Spa has a large staff to cater to the fair client traffic it sees. Bhandari has a team of 30 staff members, including 11 housekeeping. There are seven therapists – four female and three male, four fitness trainers, two gym attendants, three
group fitness trainers on contract and three pool instructors.
The Vyoma Spa is very particular about their recruitment, and chooses trained people only from Pevonia’s own spa training school. This first ever training school by the brand was opened in 2012 to deal directly with manpower training and supply issues. Before the brand opened its school, the spa got its therapists from the Delhi-based Lambency Chrysalis Academy by Floriana Group.
Aside from the basic training from the Pevonia academy, the therapists are given company-based training courses every 3-6 months, in the case of new treatment protocols, new requirements and/or refreshers.

Businesswise

This award-winning spa, apart from being beautiful, is a good revenue generator for the hotel Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi. The Vyoma Spa, Salon and Fitness Centre has an impressive number of members (215 at the time of going to press), who keep it a profitable and relevant section of the hotel.
Most of the spa clients are hotel guests and a big chunk of the salon business comes from wedding parties. There aren’t too many walk-in clients. Bridal clients mean abundant beauty services, and consequently plenty of business in the wedding season. But the fitness centre is not far behind either. There are a lot of takers for the well-equipped gym, the pool and especially, the Zumba classes.
Bhandari tells me that the memberships dip in the winter months and pick up again around March, especially for the pool. But she has some ace promotion tricks up her sleeve to keep the memberships rolling in. One of them is holding annual competitions at the gym and a party for all members of Vyoma. Members are encouraged to bring a non-member guest along, so they can check out the ambiance and services at the Spa and eventually take a membership.
Membership plans that start at 1 lakh per annum include use of spa, salon, gym and pool services, are also advertised through other traditional media like hoardings, newspaper ads, editorial coverage and standees within their property among other things. Promotions pick up pace during occasions like Holi, Rakhi, Valentine’s Day, etc. where spa offers are often combined with the restaurants and bar.

Peace restored

With a superior hospitality experience, beautiful ambience and healing treatments, the Vyoma Spa, Salon and Fitness Centre at the Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi, is one of the nicest places in the capital to have
peace restored to your body, mind and
spirit, when the going gets tough.
