Bridging the gap between the outer and the inner being, spas are helping patrons connect to their souls through holistic healing

Take a look around, and you will find everyone plugged into a device that keeps them up-to-date on what’s going on across the globe and most importantly, in their forever-growing social circle. The world has become more virtual than real, where we are operative 24/7. Slaves of our multitasking gadgets, we are becoming easy victims of occupational stress. Our obsession for these sleek and ‘do-all’ gadgets has left us with not just stress but several health problems such as ‘Blackberry Thumb’, ‘Ipad neck’, and ‘Nintendotitis’, among others. The names may sound fancy but certainly the disorders pose a serious threat to health.

According to experts, the overuse of gadgets affects the muscles, tendons, and nerves of the neck, upper and lower back, chest, shoulders, arms and hands, resulting in stress injuries. As the antithesis of this virtual era, spas come as a refreshing respite from the world of gadgets and never-ending work, infusing a new lease of life with age-old healing techniques and miraculous human touch. “A spa aims to restore balance and equanimity through harmonious sounds, soothing vistas, uplifting art and design plus the purifying qualities of hydrotherapy. In addition, the skillful hands of the therapists put us directly in touch with the build-up of tension in the body bringing our consciousness back into more clarity of how we really feel,” explains Jacqualine Tara Herron, Spa director, The Imperial Spa and Salon, Delhi.

Rise of the wellness traveller

“People nowadays lead hectic lifestyles that further lead to poor dietary and wellness habits. However, due to an overload of information over the net and bookshelves, most of us are aware of the health hazards of a stressful life. We have seen a steep rise in the number of guests from all parts of the world seeking a stress-relieving and soul-nourishing break,” says Darika Hom-uem, Spa Manager, Anantara Phuket Villas, Thailand. Today, spas have redefined the concept of a holiday by offering wellness programs that are more than just a break from work. “With an increasing number of followers of spa and the demand for innovative, authentic and holistic treatments from spa goers, this only signifies that people are looking for a stress-relieving holidays rather than leisure trip,” agrees Chandarella Luzon, Director of Spa, Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Whether it’s a short weekend break in the country or a week-long holiday overseas, people are embarking on wellness journeys to knead out the pains of a stressful city life.

Raising the bar

“Spa is now an indivisible part of this vital experience that guests are expecting to have when they go for a vacation or holiday trip,” declares Luzon. If resort spas are taking advantage of their exotic locations to attract the wellness wanderers, then hotel spas are attracting spa goers with equally rejuvenating spa programs in the comfort of their own cities. “Whether the spa is located in the city, by the sea or on a mountain top, the focus is to bring together the primal elements of life to help purify and still body and mind, thereby releasing the spirit,” declares Tara. From ambience to treatments, every aspect of the spa is carefully developed to help the patrons restore their mind-body-soul equilibrium. “Now, spa rituals and therapies often directly address the more sensitive, aesthetic and spiritual nature of our being with attention given to balancing chakras, breath through Pranayama and Reiki healing.  Meditation and yoga classes are often integrated into day packages, as well as Ayurvedic treatments and cuisine so that the whole spectrum of body, mind and soul can be nourished and cleansed,” explains Tara.

Soak up the beauty

The unwinding begins with zeroing in on a spa destination that literally reaches out to your soul with its spectacular views of natural vistas. Coining the concept of tropical garden spa, Banyan Tree Spa Sanctuary, a boutique pool villa resort, pampers your senses the moment you step in.  Nestled near the tranquil shores of Phuket’s Bang Tao Bay, its outdoor Spa Pavilions and treatment suites are the places where you could be in oneness with nature. “The awe-inspiring natural beauty all around helps one to relax from within. The serenity reaches out to your soul, encouraging rejuvenation from within,” says Ravi Chandran, Managing Director of Spa Operations for Banyan Tree Spas…Read the full version of this story on emag.spamantra.in Issue 9 Page 56
