Yoga retreats are becoming increasingly popular in Asia and around the world for consumers looking for more than just a spa experience

The ancient practice of Yoga has countless benefits. Rejuvenation, relaxation and detoxification are just some of them. Yoga retreats have, therefore, mushroomed all over the world, offering a break from routine to inculcate some of its goodness in life.  Samahita Retreat, Thailand

 The Samahita Retreat in KohSamui, Thailand, is one of the best Yoga retreats in the world. Since 2003, when the retreat opened, they have practiced AshtangaVinyasa Yoga. Although it is situated in a tourist hot-spot, it’s far from the madness of the public and sits calmly on LaemSor Beach.

 The retreat abides by eco-friendly practices and provides a luxurious and relaxed environment to stay. You can have a room that faces the beach and has its own personal balcony. There is a Meditation Garden, a Wellness Center and a Yoga Shala, where Yoga is practiced. The retreat offers programs for detox and Yoga, for 5 and 7 days and also offers courses to learn the practice and philosophy of Yoga. There is a restaurant on the property called Satva as well as a Juice Bar that serves fresh vegetarian meals and healthy snacks that adds to the experience. You can even bring your kids along as there is a great Kids Club as well as baby-sitting services for a wholesome family experience.


 SWAN Yoga Retreat, India

 Surrounded by cashew, mango, banana and teak trees, this little sanctuary is located in a village called Assagao in Goa. The location is perfect for a little meditation and soulful peace. Thriving with local bird-life, this retreat is located on a hill slope and is not far from prime Goa-beaches, Anjuna and Vagatore.

 With the usual routine of asans, Pranayam and meditation, the type of Yoga this retreat practices is Ashtanga yoga. The retreat offers Yoga classes and workshops and is also available for teachers to host Yoga events at the venue. True to ancient practice, the retreat is managed and run by sannyasis from the Bihar School of Yoga. Although the retreat is open only from October until May, you could drop in without making a booking as well.


 Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram, India

 Sprawled over 12 acres at Neyyar Dam, Kerela, at the foothills of the Western Ghats, this ashram is a great place to immerse yourself in a Yoga holiday. The Yoga vacation session requires participants to be involved in all areas of ashram-life. The ashram also offers courses and programs to study the science and art of the practice. If you want to send your children here, there is a great course for children to learn and practice Yoga as well. You can also avail of the Ayurvedic treatments and massages they offer in addition to the courses. You can choose to live in a dorm or have a room to yourself.  Yoga Barn, Indonesia

Focusing on Yoga, movement and healing, Yoga Barn in Bali, Indonesia, is a great getaway from daily drudgery. Here you can cleanse your mind, body and soul and indulge in massages and spa treatments. Located at Ubud, classes are held daily and even private teachers can rent space toconduct their own sessions. Set amongst rice fields, the retreat is serene and peaceful, like it should be. Everything at the Barn is made from natural or recycled material, and there is a café called Little K that serves fresh, healthy and organic food. Bookings can be made on the site listed below.


Island Yoga, Thailand

 Although this isn’t your typical Yoga retreat, Island Yoga at Koh Yao Noi, is a mighty popular choice for vacationers and Yoga practitioners alike. With a mix of the thrill of adventure, the serenity of yoga and the magic of nature, Island Yoga combines things that can occur in the presence of the other, and create a whole new experience. While you can go snorkeling, climbing, kayaking and biking, you can also soak up the surroundings and be at peace. A typical day at this no-so-typical sanctuary will include meditation and Hatha Yoga in the morning, which is followed by a ‘Yogi breakfast’. The rest of the day is meant to explore the island, get Thai massages or attend Thai cookery classes. The day ends with more Yoga. Although Yoga was started in Asia, today Yoga retreats are sprinkled all over the world; in places like Costa Rica, Portugal, Byron Bay and Brazil. This particular one is in South-West France. One of the best in the world and certainly the best in France, this retreat is set in a farmhouse in the midst of flower fields and a lake. Practicing Iyengar Yoga, this is the perfect place to recuperate and rejuvenate your body and spirit. The retreat also offers massages and other therapeutic treatments.
