Jiva – the unique Indian Spa brand developed by the iconic Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces, brings deep understanding of the body, mind and spirit into its offerings. As the only Indian spa brand in the world, and the fastest growing in Asia, it offers holistic spa and wellness experiences to the seasoned spa aficionado and novice alike.
Bina Patel, the Vice President – Spa Operations and Development, Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces – the co-creator of the Jiva Spa for the Taj Group, who tells me how the award – winning Jiva brand was conceptualized and built.
Tucked away in the leafy by-lanes of Colaba on the southern-most tip of Mumbai is the Taj Wellington Mews which hosts the stand alone Jiva Grande Spa in a sprawling 3 storied building. Luxury indeed in this frenetic metropolitan city, where space is the most coveted luxury. But the Taj Hotels, Resorts and Palaces (part of the highly respected Tata Group) who created this exclusive, unique ‘Indian’ spa brand do know a thing or two about luxury and hospitality. And their Jiva Spas offer both in equal measure. Launched in 2004, the first Jiva Spa opened at the Usha Kiran Palace in Gwalior. And since then, 40 (24 Jiva Spas) Spas have been developed at various Taj hotels in India and around the world.
The Philosophy
The Taj and the Tata Group take great pride in being true to form and tradition and Jiva is a part of keeping the tradition alive. The Jiva Spa concept was created after extensive research in 2003. The very name ‘Jiva’ means ‘life-force’ or ‘the very essence of life that is indestructible.’ And each Jiva experience is designed to make the guest ‘experience their heart’. Both Jiva Grande and Jiva Spas have their own distinct identity, architecture, products and exclusive treatments. Even the size and scale differs, a 250 sq.ft. spa room at a Jiva Spa would measure 350 sq.ft. at the Jiva Grande. But what is common across all spas is the commitment to green. According to Patel, “Jiva is the first spa in the world where everything that touches the client is 100% natural and organic”.
Unique Jiva Experiences
Already the biggest chain of spas in India and the fastest growing in Asia, Jiva offers holistic spa experiences. Yoga and meditation are offered at most spas, while some offer wellness retreats several times a year. Jiva blends ancient Indian wisdom with contemporary therapies. Its unique signature treatments draw inspiration from the location or its historic significance.
The Management Approach
Jiva Spa is currently the main focus area for the Taj Group as the brand is in big demand internationally. Not only does every new Taj property host a Jiva Spa, several older properties that currently don’t have one are under renovation. With a total of 40 spas already functional and 20 more in the pipeline, Patel has her hands full. But she has systems in place to support the rapid growth plans of the Taj Hotels. Her 12 member Corporate Spa team is currently supported by a staff of 400 physicians, therapists and support staff across all Jiva Spas.
A simple management method and standard reporting procedures coupled with centralized sourcing, training and supervision make new spa roll-outs relatively easy for Patel who says, “We have a great tracking system that helps in getting live feedback from the guests allowing us to continuously improve our offering.”
Spreading Wings
Over the next couple of years, some of Jiva’s most beautiful projects will come under completion. The iconic Taj Palace in New Delhi, the flagship Taj Mahal in Mumbai, the Taj Coromandel in Chennai and the Taj West End Bangalore. “The Taj Group has created several destinations where there were none before, such as Goa and Kerala. Bekal is the latest. We will do for the first time, pure Ayurveda with curative therapies and treatments there. We don’t have a luxury medical facility in the Group, Bekal will be the first where guests with serious ailments like rheumatoid arthritis or stroke can come and stay for a month,” says Bina Patel.
Jiva has now spread its wings far and wide and according to Patel will soon be experienced at the Maldives; Sri Lanka; Morocco; Phuket, Thailand; Quatar; The Palm, Dubai; Beijing, China and has just opened Jiva Spa in-room services at The Pierre in New York. With 109 hotels in India and around the world, and another 40 plus in the pipeline, Jiva is set to grow on an unprecedented scale…Read the full version of the article on emag.spamantra.in ( Issue 4 page 32)
