From Sydney, with love
Mary Alamine, co-founder of Royals Hair and Beauty Salons, Sydney talks about her journey

Mary Alamine, owner of one of Sydney’s top notch salons, Royals Hair and Beauty, is a name to reckon with. “Hair is more than just a career for me,” says she. Seeking artistic and creative pleasures to energise and uplift her is what she calls, “a colorful world where she gets to create beautiful artworks and make people smile.”

Your journey as a hairdresser

Just like any hairdresser I started in a salon sweeping the floor but from the age of eight, my dad would let me cut his hair. Obviously I would do what was considered the worst haircut ever but my dad would tell me it was the best haircut he had ever had…needless to say he lied. So my love for hairdressing began when I was really young, and now I own two salons in Sydney and I’m doing what I love; I think my dad had a little to do with that.

Tell us about your salon, Royals Hair and Beauty.

Royals Hair & Beauty is a creative space that is warm and welcoming.

As the Creative Director of Royals, I am able to not only feed and nurture my own love of the creative side of the industry and myself as a hair artist, but I am able to encourage my team’s visions ad dreams to come to life. A strong team means I can indulge my love of session styling, with this ranging from Fashion Weeks, fashion campaigns, celebrity events and photo shoots yet I also like to inspire my team to get involved in more creative assignments and extend their own creative boundaries.

What awards and accolades have you or your salons won?

As a multi-award winning salon in major hairdressing competitions and business awards, we have gained respect and recognition in the hairdressing industry.

What is the USP of your salons?
Establishing a boutique feel within the convenience of a shopping centre location has been at the forefront of the design of the two Royals salons. Our light & bright interior, which is mainly white and highlighted by our stunning colourful lanterns, ensure we receive so much interest from visitors to the shopping centre, intrigued by our unique décor, atmosphere and design.

We provide everything in one place, Royals is a full service salon offering hair, beauty, make-up, waxing and tanning services so clients don’t need to go anywhere else.

What kind of clients do your salons service?

We service a wide range of age groups, both women and men, and kids!

What brands does your salons use and retail?

We use products like Kevin.Murphy, REVLON Professional, Kérastase Paris, evo, GHD, Original & Mineral, TIGI, American Crew, and Hollywood Hair Extensions.

What are your views on the importance of education?

I believe that continual education is an absolute must for the success of any salon and stylist. At Royals we ensure that all of our team remains motivated and inspired through education platforms and opportunities that highlight everything from latest fashion trends, cutting and colouring techniques, presentation skills, to just growing as a stylist. As the Co-owner and Director of Education for Hollywood Hair Extensions I know the importance of creating inspiring education sessions to ensure teams get the most out of it.

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
Being on your feet all day for hairdressers is always a little challenging. Another challenge I find sometimes is you have to adapt to all the different personalities walking through the salon door and connect with them on a personal level but nevertheless, once you have broken that barrier you have gained one very loyal client.

What elements in the job do you enjoy the most?
I love makeovers! I also love that it’s never the same thing and we are able to get creative and put a smile on people’s faces. That is the greatest reward of all.

What inspires you in this business?
Inspiration for me can come from many places. It could be someone walking down the street, a runway show or fashion magazine or hairdressers in the industry that I look up to and admire. Whatever it is that inspires me, whether it’s for the salon or for a photo shoot, it’s always something close to my heart that tells people a little about who I am as a hair stylist.
