Introduction: Globally-acclaimed Mandara Spa opened its first and only door at The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa in Alibaug in 2008. The spa occupies an area of 20,000 square feet and is surrounded by water bodies and gardens creating a very tranquil ambience. Acclaimed for its trademark Mandara rituals, the resort’s close proximity to Mumbai has ensured clients from the metropolis as well as neighbouring Pune.
The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa in Alibaug is barely 25 km. across the harbour from Mumbai’s landmark Gateway of India. Surrounded by hills, lakes and virgin beaches, Alibaug is a captivating getaway for Mumbai-ites, and a weekend home to its glitterati. Owned and developed by the Sahil Group and managed by the Carlson Hotels worldwide, the resort has the distinction of being Alibaug’s first international five star property.
Spread over an area of 16 acres, with water bodies and landscaped areas covering a third of the property, The Radisson is surrounded by the Sahyadri mountains and the Lake Veshvi. It was the first and so far only resort to host the Mandara Spa in India – a brand of the spa management company MSpa International. MSpa chose the hotel to be its Indian partner as it proposed to develop a destination spa there, which was a perfect match as per its business strategy of establishing a foothold in the Indian market.
Since its launch in 2008, The Radisson has proved to be a catalyst in successfully propagating the legacy of Alibaug as a premier holiday destination and has firmly established itself as a ‘Wellness’ place for travelers looking out for a luxurious holiday experience.
Mandara welcomes its guests in an expansive spa reception lounge through which you enter the central spa pavilion. White is the dominant theme, and all walls bear a unique trellis design etched out in white Plaster of Paris, which you see trailing across the spa, in the relaxation areas, as well as in the rooms. Following standard Mandara practice, frangipani flowers are used in the reception as well as the treatment rooms.
The treatment rooms are built around a beautiful relaxation area in the spa pavillion with a water channel running through it, adding to the relaxing ambience of the spa. The pastel colour palette is soothing and is enriched by the generous use of teakwood, silk and touches of silver in the decor. The treatment rooms are wood panelled adding to the warmth of the spa, while Mandara’s Balinese origins are echoed in the Batik printed sheets on the treatment beds.
Each treatment room has its own small garden as a back drop, and a high ceiling to keep it cool in the summer as well as give the feel of space. Individual restrooms and shower cubicles are available in each single room, while double rooms and VIP suites are complete with steam rooms and baths to give a unique and wholesome experience.
The Salon has a unique L-shaped design with hair stations as well as foot-spas surrounded by beaded curtains giving a feeling of privacy to the client. While hair and mani-pedi treatments are done here, the beauty treatments are offered exclusively in the spa rooms.
“The entire contemporary spa design was supervised by Mandara’s architect Philip Fowler and the project team who worked with Radisson and follows their specifications. Therefore, room sizes, in-room facilities, colour, furniture and furnishings were all created to their standards,” says Jayanti Gomes, Spa Manager, Mandara.
The Spa has four Couples Rooms, eight Private Treatment Rooms, a Relaxation Lounge, a Yoga Room, Changing areas for men and women, a Hydrotherapy Room, a Salon and a Gym.
Mandara uses its own signature products for all its body treatments, while Pevonia is used for its facials. Pure Thai herbal products as well as the local tamarind fruit play a role in several popular rituals. According to Gomes, the USP of the spa are the unique Mandara products. The oils are light in texture and mild, and are quickly absorbed by the body.
The spa menu offers Spa Passages, Signature Rituals, Massage Therapies, Body Treatments, Facials, Baths and Men’s Treatments. According to Gomes, among the stand out treatments are the ‘Tamarind Body Blast’ – a scrub made of the tamarind pulp, which is a de-tanning treatment; the ‘Mandara Signature Treatment’ – a synchronised treatment delivered by two therapists which uses five techniques amalgamated to create this special treatment; and the ‘Thai Herbal Facial’ in which nourishing plant extracts nourish, hydrate and tone your skin…Read the full version of the article at emag.spamantra.in (Issue 5 page 40)
