What is a Medi Spa?
A medi spa is any medical center that operates and follows strict guidelines and advice under the supervision of a licensed health care professional, such as a medical doctor (MD) and offers non-surgical elective cosmetic medical treatments. Unlike a regular spa, where relaxing body massages that focus on calming the senses takes place, a medispa offers advanced beauty treatments that are delivered by technology to attain results.

According to the report presented by The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce Industry (FICCI) and Frost & Sullivan (F&S) 2010, the Indian wellness industry is considered to be one of the fastest growing businesses and it is estimated that the industry will be making a sizable contribution to the global trillion dollar wellness business in the coming years. It also cited that the industry is growing at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 30 percent out of which medical tourism is expected to grow at around 15.56 percent CAGR between 2007 and 2012.
Medical Tourism
The FICCI and F&S report also affirmed the total healthcare market in India to be around INR 1613.5bn and is expected to grow at 23 per cent p.a to touch INR 5587.2bn in 2015 (in the next three years). India earns approximately 4.5lakhs from medical tourism per year at a growing rate of 30 percent per year with an expectation to touch INR 100bn by 2015. Along with Ayurveda, cosmetic surgery is rated among the top five treatments demanded by healthcare tourists in India.
Today, India is dubbed as the ‘healthcare hub’ of Asia, and though the government is keen to market India as a top medical tourism destination, efforts in this regard have not been up to the mark. However, there were few good decisions such as a special Medical Visa for international patients travelling to India for their healthcare, which was introduced in 2005.
“India’s rich cultural history offers many holistic forms of treatments, so medical tourists can take their pick from health packages to de-stress or tone their body, beautify themselves, lose weight or reduce aches and pains,” Dr. Yenigalla explicates. “Thus, medi spas have now become an integral part of both the hospitality and tourism sectors in India. They are also playing a crucial role in attracting both the domestic and international tourists.”
He further declared that as one of the key players in medical tourism, there is a growing need for accredited hospitals to ensure best practices in a safe environment and the Indian government is establishing minimum quality standards. However, many of India’s private hospitals are gaining ISO9001 standardization status to represent the provision of the highest levels of patient care.
India v/s abroad
The Indian Medi Spa industry has not been truly accepted and is still prone to skepticism, as compared to countries like the US and UK. No doubt there is an increase in the awareness levels of the people/tourists about this new phenomenon – medi spa.
“When we look back, the Indian spa sector was in a way dominated by the Ayurveda treatment centres/spas based in Kerala. They fuelled the tourism sector in the state and have almost become synonymous with Ayurveda. With the advent of medi spas, a new era has begun in the Indian health care sector and people have already shown interest in this integrated science,” Dr. Yenigalla reassures.
Dr. Simal Soin, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Three Graces concedes and says that these days clients are looking for a holistic approach to treat their body and skin in a spa atmosphere. N.
