When Dr. Michael Babor laid the foundation for the company in 1956, he had perhaps not envisioned the kind of success the brand enjoys today. What started with the application for a patent for a hydrophilic oil-based cleanser, HY-ÖL®, has gone on to become global brand, enjoying the trust of thousands of beauty professionals and consumers alike. And even as Babor has created several effective product lines over the years, HY-ÖL® remains their most celebrated product. Over half a century, Babor’s black rose logo has come to be associated with rare beauty achieved through innovative skincare products.
Babor has also become the byword for ‘miraculous’ anti-ageing products because of its investment in the best of science and research. Apart from their own high-end laboratories, their co-operation with the IFAA (Interdisciplinary Forum for the Prevention of Aging and Anti-Aging Research) at the DOMHOF Klinik in Aachen is yet another way by which they try to maintain the highest possible standards in anti-aging research.
In the burgeoning Spa and wellness industry, the brand has taken lead too. Apart from Europe, its parent continent, Babor is now present in the US, Africa, the Middle East, Australia and now, Asia, with its line of face and body products. Babor was brought to India last year by JCKRC Spa Destination, thus giving the nation a taste of the brand’s luxurious products that bring together nature, science and beauty.
In a chat with Spa Mantra, Michael Schummert, CEO, Babor speaks about the brand, its philosophy, their global outreach, and their Indian adventure.
When did Babor enter the Indian market?
Babor came to India early last year, in February, 2011.
What has been the response to the brand?
Very positive; as it’s a premium brand that offers the finest quality of products and services. It has to be promoted at selective luxury Spas and hotels.
How is it perceived by the Indian Spa industry?
It is a premium international brand with values and solid credibility in the international market. The treatments are unique and result-oriented. It is thus looked upon with respect.
How has the brand been marketed in India?
We market mainly through advertisements and B2B introductions. Babor advertisements are featured in Spa and beauty magazines like Spa Mantra & StyleSpeak. It is also being promoted via interactions (meetings) with top Spas and hotels.
What has been the key to success for Babor worldwide?
Babor is dedicated to excellence – not only when it comes to product quality, but also regarding service, training, and sales support. Because we know that it is the perfectly-trained aesthetician that is the best brand ambassador.
WINNING PRODUCTS
Tell us a little about how the products are formulated?
Each and every product is manufactured at the company’s premises in Germany. In-house laboratories and long-term co-operations with renowned universities as well as other scientific institutions guarantee innovative skincare of the highest quality and effectiveness.
What is the brand’s overall philosophy with respect to the product range?
Babor unlocks the secrets of the finest natural active ingredients and translates them into luxury skincare products that deliver maximum effectiveness and skin compatibility. The result: individual skincare systems, offered in co-operation with professional beauty treatments that meet the needs of even the most discerning clientele and ensure a lastingly healthy complexion.
SPAS
Having being known as a recognized skin brand, what possibilities has Babor foreseen while launching a Spa line?
Babor has been part of the spa industry since the early 1990s, and we did massive research in the US where spas were already big that time. Since then, there has been a spa line in the assortment. Now we can rely on strong industry insights and combine them with our expertise in skin care. Our aim was to create a spa line that can do both – take a client on a relaxing journey to luxurious wellbeing, and be of true benefit to skin’s health at the same time.`
