A true love of Ayurveda has driven Dr. Subhash Ranade to spread its message across the world with a missionary zeal for almost four decades now
At theripe old age of 70, Dr. Subhash Ranade still travels over 10,000 miles every year spreading the knowledge of Ayurveda. Apart from his love of the subject that drives him, he attributes his fitness to following Ayurvedic principles in his own life. He is surely a man who practices what he preaches. And with students across the globe looking up to him for knowledge and inspiration, he needs to be a role model. Author of several books, pioneer of web-based Ayurvedic courses, and founder of the International Ayurved Academy, Dr. Ranade wears many hats. We speak to him about his rich experiences and a full life.
1. You have been associated with Ayurveda for quite some time now. Tell us about your earliest associations with this ancient Indian science.
My father and mother were both teachers. I had an inclination towards Ayurveda right from the start and hence I refused admission to Medical College and joined the Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya in Pune in 1958. I got my degree of BAM&S from Pune University in 1962. I had topped all the three University exams of Pune and became an Ayurvedic Physician.
Between 1962 and 1968, I was Medical Officer at the Primary Health Center in Pawas in Ratnagiri district. Then I came back to Pune and joined the Tilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya as teacher. I was Professor and Vice-Principal at the same institute and then left it in 1998 to join Ashtang Ayurveda College as Principal. I worked at Ashtang Ayurveda College as Principal till 2000. Between 1997 and 2000, I also worked as Prof. and Head Dept. of Ayurveda at University of Pune.
In 1973, I wrote my first book on Ayurvedic Diagnosis and till today, I have to my credit more than 147 books on Ayurveda and Yoga, which have been published in 11 foreign languages. Many of my E-books are also popular. My wife and I were the first to prepare and launch the first CD-ROM on Ayurveda called ‘Dhanvantari’, which was published by the Saffron Soul Company in Mumbai.
2. The International Academy of Ayurved started in 1996. It has come a long way in a fairly short time. Tell us more about its inception and journey.
My wife, Dr. Sunanda, and I have been propagating Ayurveda since 1981 all over the world. While travelling and giving lectures at various institutes, we came to know that many students as well as modern medical physicians are interested in visiting India and learning about Ayurveda from its roots. Hence we took the decision to establish an International Academy of Ayurveda. My two other associates – Doctors Avinash and Bharati Lele – are also the co-founder of IAA. I am proud to let you know that till today we have trained more than 600 students from all over the world.
3. What inspired you to start an academy of Ayurveda especially for foreign students?
In 1996 there were many Ayurvedic colleges imparting Ayurvedic education to Indian students. But none of these Institutions had proper Ayurvedic physicians or teachers who could teach Ayurveda in English to foreigners. Also, foreigners required short term courses on various subjects in Ayurveda, which were not available with these institutes. Hence we started IAA and very soon, the short-term practical courses on various subjects of IAA became popular all over the world.
4. What does IAA offer its students?
IAA gives its students extensive knowledge of Ayurveda, including fundamental principles, various practical subjects like Panchakarma, clinical experience like how to examine patients, and it also teaches them about an Ayurvedic lifestyle that includes diet, exercise, yoga and behavior. IAA gives a certificate after completion of the courses to successful candidates.
5. Tell us about the many affiliations IAA has with other nations/institutions.
IAA has affiliations with many institutes in all the continents of the world. The prominent ones are the Australian College of Ayurvedic Medicine, which imparts education about Ayurvedic Acupuncture; Fundacion de Salude Ayurveda Prema in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Suddha Dharma Mandal in Sao Paulo, Brazil; Seva Akademie, Munich, Germany; Israeli Center of Ayurveda, Broshim Campus, Tel Aviv, Israel; Kerala Ayurveda Academy, San Francisco, Seattle, Dancing Shiva in Los Angeles and Vedika Global, Berkeley, USA.
