The Rejuve Spa at The Lalit, Mumbai, sets the bar very high for hotel spas in India
Introduction The Lalit Suri Hospitality group has gone from strength to strength in the past few years and is among the fastest growing hotel chains in India. Apart from their impressive hotels and hospitality, their Rejuve spas take considerable credit for ensuring customer satisfaction. Since the first Rejuve –The Spa opened at The Lalit Ashok, Bangalore, in 2005; the Spa has attained new standards with each successive branch. With nothing short of international standards, Rejuve – the spa has won many accolades and awards over the years. The Mumbai Rejuve is one of their newer branches, and with its stunning expanse of 11,500 sq. ft. it is slated to be another sure winner.
The place For patrons who fly into Mumbai, The Lalit is a dream to reach, situated as it is within 10 minutes of the airport. In-city clients too wouldn’t find getting to The Lalit difficult since it is centrally located in Andheri.
Stepping into the foyer of The Lalit Mumbai is like entering a gigantic museum, since it is bedecked with stunning pieces of art. Rosen tells me later how passionate the CMD of the Lalit group, Jyotsna Suri, is about art. She personally chooses most of the adornments for the hotel, evident even in the spa, where all of the vast expanse has works of art beautifying its walls. Vibrant, energetic paintings of exercising humans infuse the place with the mood of health and well being.
The concept
Rejuve – the Spa is housed in the sprawling basement of the Lalit Hotel, and houses a state-of-the art gymnasium, nine treatment rooms, separate wet areas for men and women and a salon – Snip, that has separate sections for the male and female clients. Thoughtfully provided is a private waxing chamber for the ladies, where the more intimate beauty services may be conducted with ease.
Rosen defines the concept of the spa as “East meets West with a modern touch”. It is plain to see what he means when one sees the interiors of the spa with gleaming cream tiles and an abundant use of wood. Despite the huge expanse, the furnishing is apt yet sparse, in a deliberate bid to keep the ‘space’. Space, they understand, is very dear in a cramped city like Mumbai. “The idea is to keep it ‘open’. “There should be a feeling of openness everywhere in the spa,” Rosen asserts.
Established just a year in July 2011, Rejuve – the Spa is in sparkling condition. But that’s not just because of its newness. Spa Director Rosen, who has 26 years of experience, has a near obsession about hygiene and he routinely springs surprise white glove inspections on the spa staff. Another thing that tops his priority list is being top-end. The spa, for example, has a superb gymnasium with equipment by Italian brand, Techno, which is also supplying gym equipment to train the current Olympic hopefuls. The gym has top-of-the-line cardio and Italian brands are something of a favourite, with tiles, and salon equipment also being imported from the country. But it does well to maintain the ‘high-end’ feel of the spa, which is the intention.
The interiors
Once at the basement level, I am transported to an otherworldly luxurious domain, where I am introduced to the Spa manager, Lalit Mundkur and some of the therapists. The ambiance draws one in immediately with its welcoming wooden hues and pastel palettes. The look is contemporary Asian with long corridors, high ceilings and abundant use of wood.
Warmth, wellness and rejuvenation are some terms that can be easily applied to the clean lines and open spaces of the spa. Architect Bobby Mukherjee has designed this spa with nine treatment rooms, one of which is meant for Ayurvedic treatments. The rooms are furnished classically, and exude a sense of calm and the ambient lighting is designed to keep the mood relaxed.
But the two connected rooms where the Rejuve Experience is conducted, is in a league of its own. The first room has a hydro bed where the scrubs and masks are applied, a shower is given and amazingly, even a steam, while you’re lying right there! It’s the first of its kind facility where a mini tent is propped up over the client and a steam session is given. The adjoining room has twin water beds for massages that not only heat up during a massage, but also include the benefits of chromotherapy by exuding primary energy colours.
