Tucked away in the eastern Himalayas, between Nepal and Bhutan and bordered by China is Sikkim. An erstwhile kingdom, the state is now a globally sought out holiday destination for its pristine natural beauty. Lush forests, abundant biodiversity, stormy Himalayan rivers and serene lakes make this a paradise for holidaymakers and serious trekkers alike.
Although the monsoons have already made their first foray into this region, I am driving on the NH 31A from the nearest airport Bagdogra to the state capital Gangtok to visit the Mayfair Spa Resort & Casino. The narrow highway winds steeply through the heavily wooded Shivalik Hills accompanied by the Teesta River or her tributaries all through the journey, giving wondrous views of the valley. My day long journey from Mumbai ends when we reach the resort late evening in the driving rain. Despite the lateness of the hour, I am given a warm welcome by Shradha Rai, the Spa Manager and Resort Manager, Binod Baral.
The Resort
The Mayfair Spa Resort, the only 5 star deluxe property in north east India is located on 48 acres of mountainside property strategically situated facing the valley. Launched just over 4 years ago in June 2008, it offered for the first time the unusual concept of a spa and casino under one roof. Dilip Ray, the owner and CMD of the Mayfair Resorts felt this would be a differentiating factor from other resorts in the region.
Influenced by local Sikkimese ethos and Colonial architecture, the resort echoes it’s local origins according to the Resort Manager, Binod Baral . The magnificent entrance is flanked by large prayer wheels on either side inspired by Gangtok’s famous Rumtek monastery, while the large entrance courtyard features a Buddha statue as well as a Shiva temple. According to Baral the resort took two years to build. “Everything had to be brought from Siliguri, even a bag of sand!”
Following the horizontal layout of most Mayfair resorts, this property is built on five levels along the mountainside, with its 68 rooms, villas and suites, each offering superb views. Despite the hilly terrain, getting around is easy with a couple of elevators which negotiate particularly steep areas. Small walks bordered with a multitude of plants lead guests around the property. Luxuriously designed, the resort offers world class facilities, with the pool, gymnasium, children’s play area, restaurants and conference facilities, besides several expansive decks and gazebos for guests to relax in. But according to Baral, the biggest draw is the spa and casino. Currently the resort occupies only 28 of the 48 acres, the rest being forested land thriving with indigenous trees such as the rhododendron, pine, alder, bamboo, juniper etc. But plans include a 40 room expansion, indicating the success of their unique ‘Spa and Casino’ concept and its growing demand and popularity. In fact the Mayfair Gangtok has recently been awarded the “Travelers’ Choice 2012 Winner as a Family Resort ” by tripadvisor.
Spa Design
Located on the highest level of the resort is the Spa Pevonia, designed to give it the maximum privacy and the best views. Built on two levels, the spa occupies an area of 10,000 sq. feet. An interestingly landscaped entrance leads to the lift which takes me to the Spa Reception and lounge. The statue of the reclining Buddha on the counter seems to indicate the nirvana that awaits spa guests.
I am met by the Spa Manager Shradha Rai who tells me about the spa facilities. The lobby level has the ladies and men’s changing rooms each with 14 lockers, two showers, and steam and sauna facilities. A short walk down the corridor leads to the temperature controlled Jacuzzi which has a dramatic stone feature wall with subtle mood lighting, while other glass walls give the feeling of being outdoors. This area also has relaxing loungers and facilities for foot reflexology. The adjoining large open air Yoga Deck with spectacular views of the valley also doubles up as a pre or post treatment relaxation area according to Rai.
A spiral winding staircase leads to the second floor of the spa which features the Salon and treatment rooms. The Salon has two hair stations and a back wash designed by Porche and two Lemi mani pedi stations.
